Isolation of Azotobacter Species

Azoto What??

Azotobacter is a genus of bacteria that is found in soil and water. Bacteria within this genus can be various rod shaped bacteria that are notpathegenic and are nitrogen fixing.

The Project

The main focus of the project is to isolate azotobacter bacteria from several soils samples taken from several locations including birch and spruce tree roots, grass, and flower beds. The samples were taken from two main locations: a Lake Otis area home and a Jewel Lake area home.

Just a Thought

Living in Alaska did prove to be challenging especially with collecting soil samples during the winter. Several snow storms and rain caused the delay of the project due to the ground soil being either frozen or flooded. But in the end, the soil was collected and the project began to move foreward.
